Rules of Mus : niwanza games

Mus

rules of mus

Introduction

To play mus, 2 pairs of players and a Spanish deck of 40 cards are necessary.

The Threes are considered as Kings, and the Twos, as Aces, so that there are practically eight Kings and eight Aces.

Value of the cards

  • Face cards and threes are worth 10
  • Aces and Twos are worth 1
  • The other cards, their own value.

Aim of the game

The main aim of the mus game is to bet. There are four different rounds or occasions to bet: Biggest, Smallest, Pairs and Game (or, if there is not “Game”, it will be played for “Point”). On each round, the winning pair accumulates points (also called “stones”) depending on the bets (stakes) made.

The game is divided into cows, games and points. Each cow consists of several games (1, 2 or 3 games) and each game consists of 40 points.

The winner is the player that gets the highest number of cows that were established at the beginning of the game. See the table options below.

Starting the game

Once the cards are dealt, each player observes them and decides whether it is convenient to play with them or not.

The “hand” player starts the game. The turn passes by each player, that must decide if they play with their cards pressing “no mus” (cut mus) or if they prefer to change them into better ones pressing “mus”.

If there is only one player that selects “no mus”, it will not be possible to change the cards and the rounds will start.

The rounds or bets

After deciding by “Mus”, the bids to each one of the 4 rounds start.

Biggest

It is the first round of the game and the winner is the player that has the highest card. Usually the player that has a King, not considering his/her other cards, wins this bid.

If there is a tie, the player that has the following card with the highest value will win. In case there is a tie again, the winner will be the player that is the closest to the hand player.

Smallest

Differently from what happens on the previous round, the winner here is the player that has the lowest card. If there were a tie, the winner would be the player with the next lowest card, as it happened in the previous case.

Pairs

The winner in this bet is the player that has 2 or more cards with the same value. There are 3 types of pairs:

  • Pair: 2 cards of the same value considering the 3 is just like the king and the 2 is just like the Ace.
  • Three-of-a-kind: 3 cards of the same value.
  • Doubles: 4 equal cards or double pairs.

Obviously, the player that has doubles beats the one that has a three-of-a-kind and the one that has a three-of-a-kind beats the player that has a pair.

At least one player of each pair must have “pairs” to bet. If only one pair has “pairs”, they will win the bet. If no one has “pairs”, no points are scored and the players will change to the following bet.

Game or Point

To have “Game”, the value of the cards must be 31 or more (respecting that the face cards are worth 10, the 3 is a face card and the 2 is worth one).

The winner is the player that adds up to 31, after 32, 40, 37, 36, 35, 34 and lastly 33, in this order. If a player does not add up to 31 and does not have game, so he/she does not take part in the round.

The hand player that has 31, can only be overcome if the table option “royal 31” is marked. This special combination is possible by having a knave and three 7 (10-7-7-7).

At least one player of each pair must have “game” to bet. If one of the pairs does not have it, the other pair will win the bet. If no one has it, the players will change the bet directly to “point”.

Point (when there is not “Game”)

If none of the players has Game, the bet is for “Point”. The winner is the player that has a sum of 30, followed by 29, 28, 27 etc.

In any case, if there is a tie the winner is the player that is closer to the hand.

Course of the rounds

In each one of the rounds seen, it is possible to bet using the button Bid.

The player that starts is the “hand” that can pass or bet. If he/she passes, the following player must decide if he/she bids or also passes. If all the players pass, the round is considered finished and the next round starts.

A player can bet pressing the button Bid. The opponent pair can:

  • Reject the bid pressing Reject, so the opponent immediately scores the points bet until the last bet. If it is the first bid, the pair scores 1 point.
  • Accept it pressing Accept. They go to the next round and the bid is decided at the end of the four rounds in favor of who has the best play.
  • Raise the bid, that passes the turn to the other pair to decide it.

Ordago

It is a special type of bid. If a player presses ordago, it means that he/she bets the 40 points all at once. The partners that receive the “ordago” can:

  • Reject it pressing Reject. The opponent immediately scores the sum of the bids until the rejection and they go to the next Round.
  • Accept it pressing Accept. All the cards are shown and the player that has the best play according to the current round, will win the whole game without considering any other bids made before.

Final distribution of points

The distribution of points is made at the end of the round.

Distribution of points “Biggest” and “Smallest”.

  1. If there is not a bid, the partners that have the best cards score 1 point.
  2. If a pair bet and the opponents rejected it, the points to be scored would be until the last but one bet (if it were the first one, 1 point would be scored)
  3. If the bid is accepted, the decision of who won the round will be at the end of the round and those partners will score the points bet.

Distribution od points in “Pairs”.

  1. If no one has pairs, no points are scored.
  2. If there are pairs, but there is not a bid, it is checked who has the best play and the winning partners score the points according to the following list:
    • Pair: 1 point for each player that has pairs.
    • Three-of-a-kind: 2 points for each partner that has three-of-a-kind.
    • Doubles: 3 points for each partner that has doubles.
  3. If there were a bet, but the opponents rejected it, besides the points bet, the points got according to the previous list would be scored.
  4. If the bid is accepted, it is checked who will win at the end of the round and they will score the points of the bid plus the corresponding points according to the previous list.

Distribution of points in “Game”

If there is “Game”, the process is identical to what was explained for Pairs before.

  • If the cards add up to 31: 3 points for each player of the winning pair that has 31
  • If the cards add up to more than 31: 2 points for each player of the pair.

Distribution of points in “Point” (not game)

If no one has “Game”, that is, no one reaches 31 points, the bid is made for point so the winning pair scores the bids made plus one additional point.

If no one bids, the pair that has the highest sum of cards scores the additional point.

Table options

Cows per game
It is possible to configure the number of cows to win the game (1-3)
Games per cow
Defines the number of games to win a cow (1-2-3)
Play with royal 31 (7-7-7-10)
With this option, the player that has three “sevens” and a knave wins the round per Game, including if there is a tie.

Ranking for points

To take part in the leaderboard of this game, it is necessary to be registered and have chips enough to meet the bets.

To score points, the games have to be competitive (indicated by a boxing glove or swords). There is no scoring if 2 players at the table share the same IP.

Each player of the winning pair scores 12 points. The players that lose a game, lose 10 points. The players that leave a game, lose 20 points.
