Rules of Checkers

Aim of the game

The checkers game consists of 24 pieces divided into 12 white-colored and 12 black-colored pieces and a board of 64 squares (8x8) alternately colored white and black.

The purpose of the game is the block of all the opponent’s pieces, so that it is not possible for them to move.

How to play checkers

Each player commands the pieces of a certain color located at the start of each side of the board. The white pieces start the game.

The moves are made alternately, one per player, in a diagonal direction, by only one square and in forward direction, that is, towards the opponent’s area.

If a player manages to take one of his/her pieces to the opposite side of the board, he/she can change the piece for a king (two pieces of the same color, one above the other).

The king is also moved in a diagonal direction, but it can be forwards and backwards. According to the table options, the king can advance one square as the pieces do or cover any numbers of squares if they are free. It can never jump over its own pieces or two pieces in a row.

Capture the opponent’s pieces

One piece can capture another one if it can jump over it, but always in the attack direction and in diagonal, being placed in the square right back that one.

Besides, the kings can capture in any directions. If they can move more than one square (see the table options), they can capture any pieces that are on the same diagonal whenever the previous rules are satisfied.

The capture is mandatory. If one or more pieces are in a position of capture, it is mandatory to make such a capture and it is not possible to opt for moving another piece.

Once the capture is made, both the piece and the king must capture again if it is possible according to the previous rules and on the same turn of the player, and so on.

When two or more pieces are in a position of capture, they are subject to the law of quantity and quality:

  • Law of Quantity: it is mandatory to capture the highest number of pieces as possible.
  • Law of Quality: when the number of pieces to be captured is the same, it is mandatory to capture the ones with a higher quality, that is, the king before a piece.

End of game

The game ends when a player leaves it, has no pieces or the pieces do not have any possibilities of move (blocked or cornered).

There is a tie when both players agree on it.

Controls

When passing the cursor over your pieces, they will be colored blue if it is possible to move them. If there is a piece to capture, because it is mandatory, only the correspondent piece will be colored.

When clicking on a piece, the square where it is placed will be colored in red (move not allowed) or blue (move allowed). Once the piece wanted is clicked on and the square is colored blue, we must click on the square in which we want to place it and if it is correct, the move will be made.

Table options

Time per turn
Used to indicate the time a player has to play on his/her turn. If the time ends, the game plays for him/her. See also: Game in automatic mode
Watch player’s actions
It is advisable to use this option to promote a fair play. If the system detects any anomalous actions of a player, his/her opponent has the opportunity to cancel the game (for example, if a player leaves the game window).
The queen move more than one square
The king can move and capture jumping several squares, according to the indications given before.

Ranking for points

To take part in the leaderboard of this game, it is necessary to be registered and have chips enough to meet the bets.

To score points, the games have to be competitive (indicated by a boxing glove or swords). There is no scoring if 2 players at the table share the same IP.

The scoring of this game is based on the Elo system, which determines the power of a player. The points when winning, tying or losing a game depend on the scoring of the opponent. at the most 30 points are added or subtracted.

Example 1: if both players have the same points, the winner will receive 15 points and the loser will lose 15.

Example 2: if a player with 2000 points beats another one with 1000, there is no alteration on the scoring. Otherwise, if the second player won the game, he/she would receive 30 points (and the opponent would lose 30)

If a player leaves the game or surrenders, he/she will lose the game. If he/she leaves, he/she can be penalized with 20 points. In any cases, the opposite will be the winner if more than 10 moves are made.

Monthly Elo leaderboard

Every month an Elo leaderboard will be started with 1000 points for each player, independently on the general scoring. That is, a player can score 1 point on his/her general Elo (record) and 30 on his/her monthly Elo.

General leaderboard

The general leaderboard is determined by the Elo scoring accumulated from the moment the player started to play.
