Aim of the game

Chess is a game per turns for 2 players that is carried out over a squared board of 8 by 8 squares, also called squares where. There are 64 squares in total that alternate between light and dark squares.

Each side is differentiated by the color (white and black pieces) and has 16 pieces that are distributed the following way:

  • 1 king
  • 1 queen
  • 2 bishops
  • 2 knights
  • 2 rooks
  • 8 pawns

The aim of the game is to attack and corner the king of the opponent until it has no escape, which is known as check mate.

Chess moves

Each kind of piece has its own way to move:

The king

The king can move to a free square in any direction (horizontal, vertical y diagonals).

The queen

The queen can move along the horizontal, vertical or diagonals, but cannot jump over other pieces.

The bishop

The bishop moves along the diagonals. It cannot jump over other pieces either.

The knight

It is the only piece that can jump over others. The move of the knight is in form of “L”, that is, it moves two squares in the horizontal direction and another one in vertical, or it moves two in vertical and another one in horizontal.

The rook

The rook can move along the vertical or horizontal, but cannot jump over other pieces.

The pawn

The pawn can only move from square to square in direction to the opponent. Optionally, each pawn can move forward two squares on its first move of the game. On the other hand, the pawn can only capture the pieces of the opponent that are on the two diagonal squares ahead.

Special moves

Castling

The castling is a special deffense move in which it is possible to move the king and the rook of the same side at the same time. To do it, the following conditions are necessary:

  • Neither the king nor the rook to be castled should never be moved.
  • There are no pieces between the king and the rook.
  • The king is not in check and the squares to where it passes must not be attacked by the opposite (the two side squares towards the rook).

Pawn promotion

If the pawn manages to reach the last line, the player can change it for the piece he/she wants, except for the king or another pawn.

Capture of the pawn

If an opponent pawn moves 2 squares (on its first move) and it is placed just beside one of your pawns, you can capture it as if it moved only one square.

How to play chess

Before starting to play, the system automatically draws lots for the color of the pieces for each player (the colors are alternated in each game). The white pieces always start the game.

Each player, on their turn, has a limit of time established on the table options to move a piece. If the time ends before, the system will move a piece for the player.

Check and check mate

The king is in check when it is attacked by one or several pieces of the opponent. The check must be avoided immediately, by moving the king or any other pieces. If it is not possible to do it, the check mate is produced and the player loses the game.

It is not possible to make a move that puts your own king in check.

Tie

Press the button tie to request your opponent the end of the game in a tie. It is only possible to request “tie” a certain number of turns.

The system will establish a tie automatically:

  • If 50 moves are made between both players without moving a pawn or capturing a piece.
  • If a player is “cornered”, that is, it is not possible to move any pieces and the king is not in check.
  • If only the following pieces are on the board:
    • King against king.
    • King and knight against king.
    • King and bishop against king.
    • KIng and bishop against king and bishop.
    • King and 2 knights against king.
    • King and knight against king and knight.
    • King and bishop against king and knight.

Controls

To move a piece, click over it and pull it along the square you want. If the play is correct, the square will appear shaded. When placing a piece on a not valid position, it will automatically return to the start position.

Change the point of view

Click on the board and scroll the cursor to move the camera and site the point of view as you prefer.

Press the button view to change the point of view of the game (regular, free or schematic).

Table options

Time per turn
Used to indicate the time a player has to play on his/her turn. If the time ends, the game plays for him/her. See also: Game in automatic mode
Watch player’s actions
It is advisable to use this option to promote a fair play. If the system detects any anomalous actions of a player, his/her opponent has the opportunity to cancel the game (for example, if a player leaves the game window).
Visual aids
Option recommended for beginners in chess who want to learn the moves of the pieces.
Quick game. Minutes per player (5-20 minutos)

Enable the quick game option. If a player uses the time indicated up, he/she will lose the game.

In case of lag, the time can be synchronized when changing the turn and it can be increased in several seconds (depending on the lag).

Quick game. Bonus seconds per move (1-5 segundos)
It is possible to increase the seconds indicated each time we move a piece on quick games.

Ranking for points

To take part in the leaderboard of this game, it is necessary to be registered and have chips enough to meet the bets.

To score points, the games have to be competitive (indicated by a boxing glove or swords). There is no scoring if 2 players at the table share the same IP.

The scoring of this game is based on the Elo system, which determines the power of a player. The points when winning, tying or losing a game depend on the scoring of the opponent. at the most 30 points are added or subtracted.

Example 1: if both players have the same points, the winner will receive 15 points and the loser will lose 15.

Example 2: if a player with 2000 points beats another one with 1000, there is no alteration on the scoring. Otherwise, if the second player won the game, he/she would receive 30 points (and the opponent would lose 30)

If a player leaves the game or surrenders, he/she will lose the game. If he/she leaves, he/she can be penalized with 20 points. In any cases, the opposite will be the winner if more than 10 moves are made.

Monthly Elo leaderboard

Every month an Elo leaderboard will be started with 1000 points for each player, independently on the general scoring. That is, a player can score 1 point on his/her general Elo (record) and 30 on his/her monthly Elo.

General leaderboard

The general leaderboard is determined by the Elo scoring accumulated from the moment the player started to play.
